Big Social Media Takeaways from 2017

Platforms such as Youtube, Instagram and Snapchat grew massively thanks to the popularity of video content owing mostly to the fact that it doesn’t take as much attention to stare at a screen than it does to read an article or story.

Facebook

Facebook is without a doubt the most poplular social media channel in Australia. With 15,000,000 monthly active users Facebook can also boast that 6 out of every 10 Australians use Facebook and 1 in 2 Australians uses Facebook on a daily basis.

Facebook also boasts 1.23 billion daily active users worldwide.

Youtube

YouTube has 15,000,000 Unique Australian Visitors every month illustrating that YouTube is still on an upward trajectory when compared to the unique Australian Visitors in December 2015 (13,900,00) and December 2016 (14,700,00). YouTube’s current popularity can largely be attributed to the growth of video content and its simplicity.

A trend that proves this popularity is the fact that 85% of businesses now have internal resources and/or staff to produce video content in-house.

Instgram

Insagram is another social media app that has seen a meteoric rise in its popularity possibly due to better integration into Facebook folllowing Facebooks acquisition of the app.

When you compare the number of users Instagram had in December 2016 (5,000,000 monthly active users) compared to the 9,000,000 monthly active users in December 2017 showing an almost 50% increase on the same time in 2016.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp currently has 5,000,000 Active Australian Users and is a clear growth on the number of users in the same period of 2016 (3,100,000 users) showing that over 1,000,000 daily users have downloaded the app in the last year.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is still enjoying steady growth with 4,200,000 Monthly Active Australian Users compared to 3,800,000 Monthly Active Users in December 2016. 

LinkedIn is still one of the strongest social media tools for business owners and staff to connect with other business professionals in similar industries or potential prospects.

Snapchat

Snapchat is easily one of the fastest growing social media apps and although it has hit somewhat of a plateau in growth, don’t underestimate the apps power.

As of December 2017 1 in 3 Australians use Snapchat daily making it undoubtedly one of the biggest social media apps used in Australia.

Tumblr

Tumblr has over 794,000,000 users worldwide and is the 6th most popular social media app in Australia. 

Tumblr is especially popular with teens and young adults as the website is home to numerous fan groups for various actors/actresses and celebrities.

Twitter

 Twitter has 3,000,000 monthly users in Australia and over 330,000,000 monthly active users worldwide as of the fourth quarter in 2017.

Roughly 32% of Australians use twitter according to the latest census data, making it the 7th most popular social media website in Australia.

TripAdvisor

Trip Advisor has 2,800,000 monthly active users in Australia and has been steadily increasing for the past few years from 2,200,000 users in 2015 and while the rate of growth has slowed (2,700,000 users in 2016) the platform is still growing in users.

WeChat

WeChat launched in 2011 but has recently exploded in popularity in Australia and currently has 2,750,000 monthly acitve users in Australia. 

WeChat is essentally China’s answer to WhatsApp and its growth in Australia can be attributed to the fact that a significant proportion of the Chinese community in Australia use Chinese social media tools like WeChat, RenRen and Weibo and all of these networks are continually growing.
